Cheltenham Festival Back With a Bang and Grand National Around the Corner: Horse Racing Enjoying Post Coronavirus Comeback

Cheltenham Festival jockeys

It was great to see Cheltenham Festival jam-packed with horse racing enthusiasts enjoying a weekend of great racing, and it was in marked contrast to last year’s event, which was a shell of its usual self due to coronavirus restrictions that impacted heavily on that, and many other, essential fixtures in the horse racing calendar.

Willie Mullins was, of course, the big winner when it comes to the 2022 Cheltenham results, the veteran trainer picking up no less than ten winners. Rachel Blackmore made history by becoming the first female jockey to win the Gold Cup, doing so on the triumphant A Plus Tard, winning by a massive 15 lengths in the big race of the festival.

As well as thousands being present in the stands and terraces for the wonderful festival, there were millions who were enjoying the activities from further afield. There were those making the most of the best online betting offers and enjoying online and via their mobile devices and TV screens.

Now we can look back on last week’s events; it’s worth having a little catch-up on the key events.

What was the Result of the Cheltenham Gold Cup?

As mentioned earlier, A Plus Tard romped home in the Gold Cup, winning at a canter by a significant distance from second-place finisher Minella Indo, ridden by Robbie Power. Rachel Blackmore’s run was a 3/1 favourite, and perhaps the smart bet came in the form of third-placed Protektorat, who came in at 10/1.

As far as Cheltenham race results are concerned, this year’s Gold Cup was by no means a surprise, but that didn’t stop punters from backing their favourites.

Record Attendances Are Back

Clearly, horse racing fans were keen to get back to Cheltenham for the festival, and the number attending, especially on day one and day two, saw record numbers with over 130,000 spectating on those two days alone.

Willie Mullins Produces Record Five-Timer

Mullins was clearly the big winner at the Cheltenham Races, with his five-timer on Gold Cup day, five wins that came in at an incredible 1518-1, chiefly due to the surprise 18-1 win for The Nice Guy, which capped off a great festival for the experienced and celebrated trainer.

Those odds are simply out of this world and more akin to those you’d find at the best online casinos.

As the Cheltenham Festival comes to an end, we can now look forward to the majestic event that is the Grand National, again playing host to spectators back at the race track.

When is the Grand National?

This year’s race at Aintree takes place at 5.15 pm local time, on the 9th of April, but it is, of course, just one of a number of great races that make up the Randox Grand National festival itself, which runs for three days between April 7th and April 9th.

Much like the bounceback that the Cheltenham Festival received, following 18 months of horse races being affected by COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions, this year’s Grand National promises to be a packed-out event and one that will encourage a great deal of interest from punters happy to see horse racing make a much-needed comeback.
