The UEFA Europa League may be a relatively new tournament, but it’s essentially the latest in a series of competitions that have simply adjusted their name and qualification parameters.
The Inter-Cities Fairs Cup could be considered the first iteration of the competition we now know as the Europa League. It was formed to be a companion tournament to the European Cup.
The selection of teams was not necessarily connected to the success of each team in their respective leagues and was by invitation. A number of English sides won this competition, including Newcastle United, Leeds United and Arsenal reached the final in 1969-70.
The tournament was disbanded and replaced by the more organised UEFA Cup, and qualification was linked to performance in league and cup competitions and was, therefore, a better standard in terms of the teams taking part.
The first winners were Tottenham, who beat Wolves in a two-legged final in 1972. English teams proved very successful for much of the history of the tournament. Liverpool won the cup on three occasions, the last of which came in a hugely entertaining 5-4 win over Deportivo Alaves in 2001.
The final moved to a single-match format in 1997-98 when Inter Milan beat Lazio in Paris, with Brazilian ace Ronaldo being among the goal-scorers.
The tournament has long been considered a very tough one to win, not least because initially, there were more knockout rounds than the European Cup but also due to the fact that the big leagues that were involved had more than just one entrant.
In 2009 the tournament became the UEFA Europa League and now includes a series of qualifying rounds (for ‘lesser nations’) and a group stage. This means a successful team would have to fight through at least 15 matches to emerge victorious.
The first knockout stage is particularly tricky as that’s when teams that finish in third place in the Champions League groups drop into the competition, and that means big teams get involved and often become the new favourites to win the tournament outright.
Spanish side Sevilla won the Europa League three seasons in a row between 2013-14 and 2015-16 and again in 2019-20. The most recent English winners came in the form of Chelsea in 2018-19.
Last season saw Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt beat Scottish giants Rangers in a penalty shoot-out in Seville.

This year’s Europa League features a number of world-class teams; here is a deeper dive into the eight biggest clubs taking part in 2022/23.
Mikel Arteta will hope to see his side continue to impress as the North London club looks to bring an end to a lengthy lean run that goes all the way back to the reign of Arsene Wenger. A good run, and even perhaps lifting the Europa League trophy itself, is very plausible for Arsenal.
They have a young squad and will look to blood their top starlets in the early stages and could definitely go long into the competition. They have previously reached the final of the Europa League in 2018-19, where they were thumped 4-1 by London rivals, Chelsea.
Erik ten Hag has something of a mountain to climb if he wants his Old Trafford side to challenge for a Premier League title, and even a top-four finish may be too much to ask from the Dutchman.
Therefore the Europa League starts to have added significance. When it comes to finishing the season with a trophy, winning the tournament may be the former Ajax man’s best shot at success. It’s also a chance to see Cristiano Ronaldo playing in the tournament for the first time since 2002 when the tournament was, of course, still the UEFA Cup.
Jose Mourinho won the tournament when in charge of Man United, and much like his former Premier League team, it could give the Serie A side the best route to silverware and Champions League football.
The Portuguese boss has done a decent job at the Stadio Olimpico, and he’ll want to see his side, which now includes the addition of fantastic Argentine forward Paulo Dybala, make a real impact in the tournament in 2022/23.
The Spanish side are now a regular feature among the top six in La Liga, having finished in 6th, 5th and 6th in the past three seasons. You can expect Imanol Alguacil’s side to give any side a real battle, and they are a nice outside bet to win the tournament.
Real Sociedad has made it to the round of 32 twice in recent seasons and are well placed to do even better in 2022/23.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side has been on an upward trajectory of late and the Chilean manager, who previously took charge of Man City, helped the Andalusian side to a fifth-place finish in La Liga last season.
There’s plenty of quality in the Betis squad, including the likes of veteran Joaquin, French forward Nabil Fekir and Portuguese midfielder William Carvalho.
The Italians have Ciro Immobile leading their line, and that makes them a real attacking threat to any opposition they face in the Europa League. The Rome-based side are coached by former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri and finished fifth in Serie A last time around.
There are a number of steady talents in Sarri’s squad, but it really is Immobile that gives them the edge. The Italian international forward, who is also club captain, has netted an incredible 187 goals in 269 appearances for the club.
The Dutch side brought in former Man United and Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy as head coach, and he’s done a solid job thus far. Unsurprisingly, given the legendary goal-scoring exploits of their new manager, PSV can’t stop scoring and have already racked up 28 goals in eight league games.
They are a serious contender for the Europa League title though they do have a tough opening group to contend with.
You might not normally consider the Bundesliga side a team worthy of backing in the outright winners market, but Eberhard Fugmann has got his side purring right now. Freiburg finished last season in sixth place, and this time around, they’ve lost just one of their opening eight games and sit in second in the table (ahead of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund).
Now, it’s unlikely they will keep up the pace in the German top tier, but they could pull off a surprise in the Europa League, and their odds are very decent indeed.
This year’s Europa League features a seriously strong line-up, and here are a number of players who are sure to make a real impact in the competition.
The 37-year-old has won it all and now finds himself as something of a bit-part player in the current Manchester United set-up, and that means he is more than likely to feature regularly in the Europa League.
His mere presence will mean that any fixture in the competition will be sold out; THAT is a sign of just how highly regarded he is. He is arguably the greatest player of his generation and more than capable of proving very prolific in the tournament.
The Argentine forward chose to leave Juventus and join Italian rivals AS Roma, and his arrival at the club is quite a coup for Jose Mourinho. The 28-year-old won five Serie A titles in Turin and was part of the team that reached the Champions League final in 2016-17.
He amassed a total of 115 goals for Juventus and is a creative genius with the ball and could be key to Roma’s progress in both the domestic and European competitions they take part in.
The talented Portuguese midfielder is very much one for the future, and while his Premier League action may be limited, he is going to play a key part in Arsenal’s push in the Europa League.
The creative playmaker has helped FC Porto to two Primeira Liga titles and cost Mikel Arteta a big fee, but he’s very much a player who the Spaniard can build a team around for years to come, and his education will start in the Europa League this season.
The first qualifying round of the competition starts on the 4th of August, and the group stages begin on the 8th of September. The final of the 2022-23 Europa League takes place on the 31st of May at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.
